We don't even know where to begin with this part. Beyond all the beautiful and generous gifts we received, there were so many individuals that volunteered their skills and labour to make the wedding all that it was.
First the place. Sally (Mother of the bride, who is actually responsible for doing pretty much everything at/for the wedding) and John(financial sponser and soon-to-be official stepfather of the bride) hosted our wedding on their stunning waterfront property, which was a recent acquisition.
Helping to prepare the space were Joanne, our wonderful gloveless gardener, who volunteered extra hours in order to make the deadline.
She was assisted by our friends Peter and Britta, and Mira's Father Brian(also the master recycler) and Stepmother Linda, who remains unchallenged as the true plant whisperer in the Burke/Moore family. Catherine Corey and Ashley Watson also worked hard setting up the tables on the wedding morning.
We would like to thank the primary financial contributers, our wonderful loving parents: Dr. John Corey & Sally Burke, Ken & Maureen Junck, and Brian Burke and Linda Moore. Beyond contributing financially to the entire production, Ken and Maureen Junck(Derek's parents) also threw a great rehearsal barbeque the evening before. The ease with which Maureen prepares delicious food is a marvel to behold.
We can't tell you what a gift it was to hold the wedding on the Sunshine Coast. Everyone hired to help with the event was so generous.
Howard and Patricia kindly rented us the elegant tent and dishes from Gibsons Party Rentals.
Joe of Roberts Creek's The Gumboot Garden Restaurant and his staff prepared the food and provided the service.
Diana Halter and Blaine Dunaway played harp and violin during the ceremony and reception. Diana is a resident on the Lower Rd. property where the wedding was held, and it was such a pleasure getting to know her and her family.
Not from the coast but equally important are the cake makers. The massive and delicious ginger cake was provided by Giulia Vendramin and Chef Rob Wood of the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. Mira graduated from their culinary arts program when she was 18 years old.
Many guests staying the evening were put up in Sally and John's Malcolm Creek Cottages on Metcalfe Road.
Thank you to Brian and Dr. Mona Lee for catching the fish we enjoyed for dinner, even though they were not able to attend.
We were fortunate enough to be treated to a set by one of Vancouver's most renowned local Dj's Dr. Jones aka Christopher Jones(the bride's sister's beloved), and the CD's were a gift from Mira's best friend/boss Mercan Dede aka Arkin Allen and Jarret Denton Gibbons.
Mira bought her dress from Heather at Something Blue. She looked forward to every fitting.
Janice of Alexia's Seaside Spa is one of the ones responsible for making Mira glow. Janice has been caring for Mira with her gentle hands since she was little.
Mira's sister Asha Burke of the Asha Hair Studio was the primary one responsible for making Mira look as lovely as she did, while Jordan Junck(of 8 Foot Faces Photography and Writing and of course Derek's older brother) and Kari Heese(of Fractured Light Photography and Jordan's beloved) transformed both of us with the magic of their photography. We can't tell you how much those pictures mean to us. They surpass in beauty even our perfect recollection of the day. And for anyone who missed it, thanks to Kari's supreme skills as a photographer, our little wedding was featured in the May 2007 issue of Real Weddings. Pretty exciting.
The space for the ceremony was set by the indescribable whirling of Mira's father, Raqib Brian Burke(of Open Secret School of Whirling). Pastor Richard Stetson of the Gloria Dei Lutheran church and Seemi Ghazi, a professor at UBC and teacher in the Rifai Marufi Order, spontaneously created the most poetic and exquisite ceremony we have ever experienced. Of course we are certain everyone feels that way about their own wedding. O it was so beautiful to be in the middle of it.
Thank you so much to the girl's who snuck into our bed and breakfast suite and made it perfect. Even as tired as we were, it was a perfect evening.
And a special thanks goes out to Mike Shannon for not killing Derek on his Stag night, though we think that was purely by accident. Regardless, Mira is forever grateful. Thank you to Ashley Watson and all the other girls who organized Mira's stellar Hen night on Bowen Island.
A special honourable mention goes out to D, Michelle and Katie for the absolute best RSVP(click here to see noted brilliant rsvp), and to Anna Burke for our favorite love letter(click here to see noted brilliant love letter).
Thank you everyone for being there. We love you.
